Again and Again

1892

I usually look at what is described as a swag on the Historic England entry when I am passing or the tiled alley and chandelier between the two shops.

Number 59 has most recently been used as an insurance broker. Next it will be a charity shop.

I'm note sure that I had noticed the date before.

The year saw a significant fire which destroyed the building that was at this location.

" On this day 17th January 1892, 'The Great Fire of Maldon’ wreaked havoc and destruction amongst the businesses and townsfolk in Maldon’s High Street. The fire broke out from Orttewell's Ironmongers due to a suspected explosion caused by a mixture of oily rags, liquid paraffin and even gunpowder! The fire raged and engulfed buildings between the Public Hall and the corner of Market Hill. The fire was tackled by the men of the Maldon Volunteer Fire Brigade who would have been alerted from their station up on London Road by the ringing of the bells from atop the Moot Hall by means of a emergency lever at street level. The fire brigade were equipped with manual and steam powered fire engines"

The former building was.the home of 'the fat man of Maldon'.  One of the engines is displayed locally.

It is peculiar how our town highlights.frequently his 'fatness'.  There is even a commemorative plaque.

Yet another frustrating day in the office.
