Falling leaves

I've always wondered about the origin of the word "fall" which we use instead of autumn.  (I've always been fascinated by the origin of words.)  I found this, “Autumn comes from the Latin word “autumnus,” with the root of the word meaning “the passing of the year.” The term “fall” was likely a deviation from the Old English words “fiaell” and “feallan,” both of which mean “to fall from a height.” It is assumed that this new name for the season was inspired by the dropping of leaves."  We get so many of our words from old English words, which isn't surprising, I guess.  I like the idea of "the passing of the year".  In the ancient Celtic calendar, November 1st is the first day of winter.  A bit of a wintery feel this morning.  I'm looking forward to a few days of warmth beginning tomorrow.
