Weirs

Walked into Grassington then down to the local point of interest at Linton Falls. Two of the falls are provided by weirs constructed across the River Wharfe to supply power to the local mill, now long demolished. The photo was taken from the footbridge below the main, long, curved, weir; the shorter weir in the background now supplies a small hydro electric scheme. The scheme was originally built in the early 20th century and operated until 1948 but was updated and brought back into use about twelve years ago. It was certainly humming to itself today.

Downstream from the footbridge the river continues to tumble and roar over over a series of rocks, but the position of the sun made it difficult to photograph while we were there. The extra shows a quiet corner upstream from the sluice - the latter also appears to the bottom left of the main Blip.
