Welcome the European Hornet
Vespa crabro
Relax, they are big and scary looking wasps, but actually they are docile and rarely aggressive. Plus, being native to the UK, they do not pose a threat to wildlife. In fact in parts of Europe they are themselves an endangered species. This is probably due to their size and relationship to the often despised common wasp.
Coincidentally, there was an article on the local news today, here in North Kent, on the subject of the Asian Hornet. These are definitely not wanted as they are invasive and feed on our bees.
I took a few photos today and invite you to take a look on my site: Heather Kennedy - Autumn Speaks (myportfolio.com). These include a shot of a pair of dragonflies mating (in mid October!) and, at last, some decent looking fly agaric.
