I decided it was time to swallow my irritation with Richardson’s over the fence debacle as the lure of their offcuts was strong and I went through and picked out some useful bits of wood and then headed up Sleet Fell as it was such a stunning day with astonishing light.
I had thought to take my binoculars with me in the hope of spotting deer. I could hear them but scanned across the fell side and valley bottom without any luck. As I headed down the late light picked out a beautiful golden hind in the bracken on the fellside. Once I’d got my eye in I saw another four hinds and then the stag with his fine set of antlers.
