The Arizona Dude fire
Quite by surprise we came upon the sign marking the lightning started fire area that destroyed Zane Greys cabin, took 10 lives and destroyed over 20,000 acres. The published accounts very from 6 to 10 lives that were lost. You can see a burned tree on the right and the new growth all around.
From the Arizona Republic:
"The Dude Fire started on June 25, 1990. In addition to the six lives it claimed, it burned more than 37.5 square miles. It took out 60 homes, including the historic cabin of author Zane Grey. It was contained July 1."
On a happier note we had a good time exploring this forest road just below the Mogollon Rim for several miles. By the time the early afternoon rains began we had found a place for lunch in the small forest town of Pine. They tell me the crazy ones here are referred to as Pine Nuts.... sorry.
