Mother Theresa - Skopje
Another visit to Skopje today, this time with a guided walking tour which proved very helpful in understanding the look of the city.
The buildings are a mix of old brutalist style from communist time, renovated (or partly renovated) to a ‘modern’ look, and brand new. The city suffered a major earthquake in 1963, reducing the majority of buildings to rubble - the old station building still stands in part, with the clock face stuck on the time the quake struck.
The new buildings and refacing project has been part of a development project from 2014 - its ground to a halt with government changes so many buildings stand half dressed. The style of choice for the new lol is neo-classical, with marble facades, columns and broad steps. Adding in many many statues. It all felt a bit Disney-esque. But with big open streets and squares, and the buzz of the bazaar, it was very appealing.
Out of all the statues I picked Mother Theresa who was born here in Skopje, and held in the hearts of the Balkan countries.
