Another sunny day
I went to the garden centre early before it got busy. My main purpose was to get ericaceous compost for planting onto my allotment the blueberry bushes my daughter in law gave me recently. They were not happy in their garden, but seem to be coming back to life now. They had a fair number of Halloween things for sale - but I really loved this display of all kinds of colourful squashes. I’ve grown some of these in the past- they’re really good for roasting - but I didn’t this year.
Later in the day I was down at my allotment in the warm sunshine, digging the bed for the blueberries. And then pulling up a whole load of nettles which encroach onto my plot from the waste ground next door. I did have an idea to clear the nettles and make a more varied wildflower space on this piece of uncultivated ground. But I’m not sure about it now. Although they’re pretty ugly in their uniformity, I wonder whether in fact nettles provide a better environment for insects and wild creatures than a woman-made wildflower ‘meadow’.
