Jätkäsaari
We stayed over in Jätkäsaari area in the Hotel Clarion. After we checked out we had a walk by the sea and then went to see an orange bridge called Rokkiporkkana (Rock Carrot).
Jätkäsaari (Busholmen) is an area by the sea in Helsinki. I It was the site of the main container port in Helsinki until late 2008, when the harbour moved to Vuosaari. What is now known as Jätkäsaari, was originally a group of four islands: Jätkäsaari (Busholm), Hietasaari (Sandholm), Saukko (Uttern) and tiny Saukonkari. The sea between the islands and the continent was filled, creating a peninsula to house harbour facilities. The area became an island once more with the construction of the Ruoholahti Canal.
Now Jätkäsaari area has 17,000 residents. Before it became a residential area, Madonna had a gig at the site of the former container harbour on 6 August 2009 as part of her Sticky & Sweet Tour. Over 85,000 tickets were sold, making it the largest for-pay concert ever held in the Nordic countries. Surrounding air and maritime space were closed for the event, a move usually reserved for matters of national security at the time. We were also there!
Then we drove to the city centre, did some shopping and after a coffee break we left home.
Emma and Peetu had a good weekend at home and were happy when we arrived :)
