Shimla: Day 2
This morning we took the 'toy train' from Shimla; a narrow gauge line high in the mountains with some spectacular views. After about two hours we arrived at Kandaghat from where our cars collected us. An interesting journey with lots of twists and turns; there was another group from a different tour company on the train who were going the whole length of the line, a journey of five hours. It was great fun, but two hours was enough.
After lunch we headed off to the Jakhoo Temple, an ancient temple dedicated to the Hindu deity, Hanuman. We had been warned not to have mobile phones or cameras on display or to wear glasses as the temple monkeys would try to snatch them. We did see one monkey playing with someone's glasses, but I think the owner managed to get them back.
Finally, we went off to the Mall Road and The Ridge. Mall Road is the main shopping street in Shimla with a few international brands on display, and The Ridge is the centre of all cultural activities. Back in the days of the British Raj Indians would have been banned from the area and it was used for relaxing and promenading by the British. My main shot is at the entrance to The Ridge, whilst I've added some extras from the Jakhoo Temple and the train journey.
Another tiring day and I'm still not over the bug which I've had for the last few days, but I'm not alone; two other men on the tour are suffering too. Another early night beckons.
