Pub Mirror
In the pub mirror what do I see?
A bloke with a beer. He looks like me.
I duck down. Out of sight
I allow myself a flight
of fancy: I picture
I'm being offered a free beer,
a rare ale known as 'Private Parties.'
It's in a sturdy pint glass, full
to the brim. Wonderful. But I must
keep it away from that gull.
In this fanciful flight
anything might
happen. That bird is an alcoholic,
for sure, and more than willing to peck
out my eyes in order to get his beak
into my booze. I'm beginning to wish
I'd not let it get this far. I could cut
short this nonsense, return to reality, but
I'd dearly like to sample that beer.
I'll risk it. Then at least I (or
the gull!) can face the mirror
and watch it being drunk.
'Mmmm,' as Homer
Simpson would say, 'Beer.'
Mmmm, Beer
