A Foggy Morning in Field Dalling
A cold, foggy start to the day but later the fog cleared and we have had warm sunshine.
M and I enjoyed an excellent talk at the village hall in Field Dalling (pronounced Field Dorling) this morning. It was given by historian and author Neil Storey, about Norfolk during WWII. He was very engaging and his presentation was fascinating.
He told us that at the beginning of the war, invasion via the North Norfolk coast was very much feared. The pier at Cromer was considered the perfect place for the enemy to dock and drop off invasion troops. To prevent this, the Royal Engineers were deployed to blow a hole through the middle part of the pier which resulted in the section out to sea being completely disconnected from the end attached to the coast. That was fine until the RNLI pointed out that the lifeboat crew were no longer able to reach the lifeboat. So they had to build a narrow footbridge across the gap for use by the lifeboat crew. He showed us a photo of this footbridge, which looked alarmingly narrow. I can imagine that running across this in windy weather or in the dark was rather hazardous to say the least.
