On Some Days

The Wind . . . Yusuf/Cat Stevens

We all had a day off today.  The next tasks are clearing piles of scrap metal in the surrounding acres and that will be done by a digger. We decided we would come home but first we visited an old friend.  She is now a widow living in a beautiful home at Pegasus which is a new town built north of Christchurch.  When it first went in I thought that's a long way out.  The new motorway system has made it  commutable and our friend was a pilot and could whizz out to the airport easily.  She has been retired a year and is painting, making friends in the area and generally doing okay.  Before she was a pilot she was a meteorologist.  Every morning she looks at satelite weather images on her computer.  I knew this was a Nor'west arch but she told me the jet stream is above this bank of cloud.  The roiling grey is strong winds in the cloud and you do not want to fly into it.  The winds haven't come down to ground level yet.  After morning tea with her we drove home under the arch until we hit rain at the Lewis Pass.  The wind had come to earth by then and it was blustery.  Coming down into Richmond the sun was out.  I will be early to bed very soon.
