The Sound of Autumn
My first sight and sound of pink footed geese this Autumn, wave after wave of them passing over Burton Mere late afternoon. I heard them before seeing them, for me the sound of our Icelandic visitors is the most uplifting sound of the season.
I had travelled to RSPB Burton Mere to meet up with P, who had travelled up from Shropshire. We agreed to meet up again in the Spring.
I’ve added a couple of extras. Work elsewhere on cutting reeds back had caused all the birds on the reserve to move to the main Mere. There were huge numbers of black tailed godwit especially, and significant numbers of redshank. On a windy day most of them were hunkered down, heads tucked back.
