Jah Wobble
Jah Wobble is one of those artists whom I like in principle more than in practice. I'll always read an interview with him and I would heartily recommend his autobiography, 'Memoirs Of A Geezer'.
However, I only own a couple of his albums - and you might enjoy 'Visions Of You', which he recorded with Sinéad O'Connor - but the one I go back to time and again, is a collaboration that he did with Brian Eno called 'Spinner'. It's a cracking mix of dub and electronica.
I'm not sure I'd have been sufficiently motivated to see him live except for two significant factors: firstly, he was scheduled to play the Brudenell Social Club, this evening, and, secondly, he was playing his dub interpretation of Public Image Limited's 'Metal Box' (which he played on originally).
Thus, the Minx and I travelled across to Leeds, this evening, enjoying a drink and pie and mash in the social club before going into the wonderful, intimate gig space.
Jah and his band appeared on stage and I was unbelievably delighted to see Jon Klein on guitar. There was some preliminary banter, which was kind of reminded me of my uncle Pete: "Wanna know why I'm wearing this glove? Well, you wouldn't understand; it's a suvvern thing."
(Hats off, though, to the lad who shouted out "Are you a Michael Jackson tribute?")
The gig itself was excellent: intense, powerful, and carried entirely by its own momentum. You wouldn't need to know 'Metal Box' to enjoy it.
Would I go and see him again? I'm not so sure. But did I have a great evening? Absolutely!
