Sally Mair - Loving life

Back to Kotor

Today we had an adventure. We didn't feel we'd had long enough in the old town of Kotor last week so decided to go back. We were joined by another lady from Scotland and her niece. I did lots of research last night and decided to ignore the advice given by the hotel which involved going ten miles in the wrong direction and picking up a bus which went "the long way around". Instead we took a local bus, €1 each, for a 20 minute journey, then the free ferry across a narrow part of the bay followed by another local bus, €1.5 each. All went smoothly going and in fact we were joined by another group of eight who wanted to go to the cable car at Kotor - we didn't. The journey took 1 hour 45 mins including waiting time and we had a great time travelling. Lots of very friendly locals on the bus making sure we didn't miss our stops.
We got off the bus at the entrance to the old town and turned the opposite way to the direction taken by our guide last week. We started by walking around part of the 15th century town walls in the sunshine.
There were stunning views up the mountain behind the town where the walls zigzag up the hill to the church of Our Lady of Remedies, 650+ steps. The path then goes up by the same number of steps to the fort at the top. We opted to admire it from afar and you can see the wall in the blip and the extra. We found several churches open as we wandered including a tiny Serbian Orthodox church of St Peter of Cetinje - the one with the wooden finish in the collage. The larger church is the church of St Nicholas. The frescoes and icons in both are quite beautiful. While wandering we found a sign for a restaurant on a roof top terrace so decided to explore. It was a beautiful little oasis of calm where there was only one other table in use and we were four floors above the crowded alleyways . The building was medieval so had narrow stairs and painted beams. We sat in the sun and revelled in the peace. The doorway in the collage is the way onto the terrace.
After lunch we wandered on and in total spent around 3 hours exploring. The alleyways and staircases are very picturesque and as you can see, we kept coming across groups of people posing artistically in them!
We met up with our friends again and decided to follow the same route back. This time the timings all worked and our two buses and the ferry all seamlessly connected, for another 2.5 euros each we were back in our hotel an hour after boarding the bus in Kotor having travelled 25 miles. Takes longer than that to cross the city of Edinburgh - which incidentally is another world heritage site!
Today's extra is more church shots from Kotor and an early sunset from our rooms balcony - as well as a warning to parents of disruptive children.
Thank you for the kind words about yesterday's angel fountain, I thought she was quite beautiful.
