Angels in the Octagon
Heavy thunderstorms first thing this morning, followed by one of the most muggy, steamy days we've had in a long time. In short, the thunder did nothing to clear the air!
So I decided to go to Ely for the day. I've lived in Cambridge for a number of years now, but this is the first time I've made it out to Ely. The Cathedral dominates the town and the Octagon tower is a key feature. You can go up the tower and see the views from the roof (more impressive on a clear day) and see the internal superstructure of the Octagon 'lantern' itself.
Each facet of the octagon has four angels 'panels' and the 'ceiling' ultimately represents heaven. The charming thing about the whole set up is that there is a panel on each side which opens so that you can look down... For a face to face meeting with an angel, please look here.
