Stari Most - Mostar
Packed it in today.
Woke to find out lay-by park up had a great view into Bosnia, also a beautiful little church perched on a nearby hillside.
Drove on through the border and stopped for coffee and breakfast in Stolac. Realised on arrival we had been there before - 7 weeks ago! It looked nicer this time, sun, Saturday busy, little market going on. Also stopped to see the neolithic tombstones at the Necropolis of stecci - which we had driven past last time.
Onwards to Mostar, and a campsite on the north edge of town. Perfect for a cycle in to the centre, and a walk round the old town(very touristy), a look at Stari Most (the ancient bridge, which was destroyed in the war in 1993, but rebuilt to good effect), and the Museum of War and Genocide. The museum was as harrowing as it sounds - stories from survivors of their memories and experiences of the war in 1992-1995. It is shocking to read these first hand stories and try to believe that such atrocities could happen. And it’s not long ago. The town itself still bares the scars of the war - bombed out buildings left as they were, pock marks on other buildings from gunfire.
And still we turn to the news and it goes on.
