The Edge of the Wold

A view of the village

For me, this view down from the lower slopes of the Park has so many of the defining features of the village. In the foreground the rough grassland of the Park on the edge of the Wolds scarp, with brighter green improved pasture beyond. A grazing sheep on the outskirts of the village. The spire of St Edith’s. The village beck meandering though the fields toward the village, having arisen in chalk Springs on the slopes of the Park. An oak tree in the Park, almost the last refuge for oaks in the village. And in the distance the Plain of York, the village being set between plain and scarp.

The clocks have fallen back, the nights have drawn in, it was a beautiful cool Autumn morning. Part of which was spent in a Table Tennis coaching session in the village hall. After a 46 year gap in playing, some of the old skills are coming back. But after an hour or so, my energy level dips, and the coordination starts to go. The side effects of the leukaemia are becoming a little more apparent. The walk in the Park in the afternoon was harder work than usual. I tend to leave the big camera behind to save lugging a few extra kilos up the hill, hence the reliance on the camera phone.
