Dot & Paul
LITTLE COTTAGE
By Virginia Wauchope Bass
(Hesper the Hare version)
I know a little cottage
Where everything's just right;
The windows bloom with tulips.
At dusk there's candlelight.
The knotted oak beside it Is webbed with ivy leaves,
And honeysuckle tangles
In clusters round the eaves.
The friendly gate swings open
Against a low stone wall
Where quaint old fashioned blossoms
Design a Paisley shawl;
And up the winding pathway
The stones with moss are grown
I love that little cottage
Because it is my own!
The woodland wraps around it,
It seems to have no end,
The squirrels, the deer, the birds,
Welcome you as a friend
Along the winding stream
Where the water trickles by,
You’ll feel a gentle spirit
A hare watching from the sky.
When I moved here Dot and Paul owned the cottage next door. They were summertime neighbors. Hubby went away more back then and I worked so I stayed home. I can't tell you how many nights Dot and I would pull all nighters cleaning, painting, moving furniture, doing laundry...We would pass each other in the night on the way to the shed or trash can and laugh and laugh about how crazy people would say we were if they caught us. Those really were the happy days. She has been gone 18 years but I still miss her and our nights with the windows opened, dust flying and brooms dancing around the cottages. Their only daughter is tearing down the old cottage and building a McMansion. Our beach neighborhood has lost it's charm. I'll miss the cottage probably as much as I miss Dorothy.
Thanking Marlieske for hosting.
