Is This a Beetroot I See Before Me?

My blipping activities have been somewhat curtailed over the last two and a half weeks. Mrs TD and I have been away attending to various family duties and, while we took cameras and computers with us, we omitted to take a mains cable. Minor internet activity was possible using smart phones but serious work was impractical/too tedious (the reader may delete as appropriate).
Returning home late yesterday to an almost empty house, we found this specimen making its best effort to evolve into a sentient life form. Fortunately it had failed to escape from the confines of the refrigerator and we were able to humanely despatch it once we had documented its progress.
