Over Yonder

Das Cabinet Des Dr. Symon

My Dear Princess and Dear Fellow,

I decided to do the thing where you watch one horror movie for every day in October. Living with a horror-hating wife, this is something of a challenge but I managed it. I also decided to make them movies I had never seen before and to try things I normally would not. So here's the list:

Terrifier 2
God Told Me To
Mandy
In A Violent Nature
Salem's Lot (2024)
Perfect Blue
You're Next
Jess Franco's Count Dracula
Needful Things
Thanksgiving
Let The Right One In
Kill Baby Kill
The Return of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre
Troll Hunter
Infested
Urban Legend
Suspiria 2018
Werner Herzog's Nosferatu
The Love Witch
It's What's Inside - Didn't finish this one due to annoying characters.
Black Swan
Martyrs
Deadstream - Or this one. It's about a YouTube influencer. Say no more.
Die Alone
Pan's Labyrinth
Hatchet
Humanist Vampire Seeking Consenting Suicidal Person
Cure
Hell House LLC
The Wailing
Werewolf by Night
Seconds
Cuckoo
Ginger Snaps
Eyes Without A Face
Attack the Block
The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari

As you may notice, that is a little over 31 and that's because if the movie was REALLY crappy (I'm looking at YOU here, Return of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre) I'd keep going until I found a good one.

Of the above, I liked: Mandy, In A Violent Nature, Salem's Lot, Perfect Blue, You're Next, Infested, The Love Witch, Black Swan, Die Alone, Pan's Labyrinth, Cure, Werewolf by Night, The Wailing, Cuckoo, Eyes Without a Face

Zero out of five, would NOT recommend: Thanksgiving, The Return of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre, It's What's Inside, Deadstream, Hell House LLC

Movies I am ambivalent about: All the others

Movies I can never unsee: Martyrs*. It was very good. But never watch it.

As for Caligari, I wouldn't say I liked it exactly but it was very unsettling. It reminded me of watching jerky Eastern European Soviet-Era cartoons on BBC2 and being traumatised by them.

S.

* It's quite a philosophical French horror movie, the essential message of which is that life is suffering and pain followed by the endless void of meaningless death. Those French are a hoot.
