Rosehearty R.A.F Tower
This tower was built in the 1980s as a watch Tower for the now defunct Rosehearty Bombing Range which was situated off shore about 3 miles to the west. There were large floating targets on which the RAF dropped bombs. This noisy practice was abandoned around the turn of the century. I am old enough to remember when there were two huts, manned by local worthies armed with binoculars during practice sessions. Red flags were flown as a warning when practice was going on - these of course were largely ignored - the noise level was such that no visual indication was needed. The planes seemed to use the chimneys of my aunt's house as markers for the run in to their target - not inspiring confidence once it became known that on one occasion a plane completely missed the sea and dropped a bomb in a field killing a cow.
The tower is now a private dwelling and holiday let - superb for whale watching.
