The Maker of Paignton

A blue plaque was unveiled today by the Torbay Civic Society for Arthur Hyde Dendy, acknowledged as the ‘maker of Paignton’, having been involved in many aspects of its development.
He was a businessman, and entrepreneur, who financed the construction of Paignton pier, which was opened to the public in 1879, and on which the plaque has been fastened. Keeping one step ahead of Torquay pleased the man renowned as ‘the maker of Paignton’ who famously claimed that ‘Torquay was built for Paignton to look at’.
Afterwards we adjourned to the large pub opposite , which is named after him. EXTRA
