Mystery hanging
Our friend textile artist, Judy with the Chinese wall hanging bought many years from an antique dealer in Hay. She has just repaired after it has lain for years in the back of a wardrobe because there was no obvious system of hanging it.
Nothing is known of its provenance, except it is about 100-120 years old, so M took it into the Burrell museum in Glasgow for their Chinese curator to examine.
She was dismissive of it, saying it had no value and was typical of the work made by poor Chinese who made these to earn money and sold them door to door to bourgeoise families.
But as an example of fine needlework and Chinese artistry it is a work of art whether it has monetary value or not, an example of craftsmanship long gone
