Garbasaurus
The artist, Greg Elliot, that built this public art is a long time friend of my father's. We met up with him today to check out a car he is building. He used to do custom sign and car painting, but since retirement has taken on other artistic opportunities.
This statue, built in 1999, commemorated the 20th anniversary of OPIRG. A group with many environmental mandates, one of which was to clean up Guelph's Speed River (background).
The first year of river clean up resulted in 672 pounds of garbage. When Greg set out to design his statue he took many things into consideration. He chose items collected from all twenty years and made sure the finished product weighed 672 pounds.
One of the coolest facts of Garbasaurus is that it is an international geocache site.
