Slime mould
This is a common sight at this time of the year, known as dog's vomit fungus. Fuligo septica. It moves, slowly, over the grass as it grows. The look of it changes too. In other places it is called scrambled egg fungus. It's harmless, and it's another sign of autumn.
This year there's been a lot less rain and it's milder than many recent years. There are still cattle out in drier fields, which is quite unusual for the end of October.
