Above And Beyond...

Morlais Castle

Just after 8.30am I was at fellow blipper SilverImages house for a day out photographing Morlais Castle, Merthyr Tydfil, South Wales UK. As is customary, we started with a full cooked breakfast at a cafe on The Polo Grounds that I last went a quarter of a century ago when I worked the area - so it was nice to see it was still operating and as good as ever!

Mid morning we eventually found the remote Morlais Castle (1270AD) and walked up the escarpement to the top that offered extensive 360 degree views over Merthyr and the Brecon Beacons. It's now a very good ruin but the underground crypt (see the extra which is five photo's joined) shows it was once a large castle but apparently never completed as it was so remote and deliberately ruined by the start of the 14th century, The other extra is the crypt entrance.

After photographing a nearby Viaduct, we headed to Cyfarthfa Castle (a fortified house) for coffee. Ken had cake but I was still full from the breakfast!

The main photo' is of a family heading down the cliffside of Morlais Castle with lovely light behind them making a dramatic backdrop.
