The Doldrums

Yes, Christmas is 7 weeks away, almost 2 months and we already have the ferris wheel up in Princes Street Gardens although it’s not turning quite yet but the building of the Christmas Market is well under way. To add to the depressing thought of the permeating smell of deep fried burgers  which will be the trade mark smell of the market, the day itself was excessively grey and gloomy.

Daughter#1 and I met in a new location for coffee before her gallery stint. We decide to grace the BlackSheep coffee shop in the middle of Princes street. We will not be back . We ordered online as we went in and then had to negotiate a flight of stairs carrying a tray with two full coffee cups. I have to admit I copped out of that and carried the daughter’s bag while she did the necessary. I find it hard enough to carry a tray of full coffee cups on the flat ,not spilling a single drop , without climbing stairs into the bargain. Upstairs the area was more like a gentleman’s club and although the view over to the castle was lovely, the surroundings were depressingly gloomy. However, even I have to admit, the coffee was good.

Going our separate ways, I went home to make a chicken casserole which will hopefully last me the rest of the week and then to do a clearing out and tidying of the of ‘stuff’ in what I used to call my space when HL was wont to secrete himself in his study, the one with the DOOR  as blippers from years back will remember and which was only opened to the public on a Wednesday when he was up the hills.

It felt very cathartic to rid myself of odds and ends kept for scenarios that have never come about.  It was at that point I started looking for a knitting pattern for a cardigan I have knitted about 8 times for daughter#5 and who wants another one. That took about half an hour of hunting through 3 boxes of patterns  in 3 different locations until it was eventually found.

It’s almost dark now and the sky is an interesting dark grey mauve colour. It’s more attractive than it’s been all day. Time to draw the blinds and look forward to ‘Come Dancing’ and maybe make inroads in to my accumulating stock of gin.
