My organisation publishes the Living Planet Report annually, detailing the state of the environmental world. This year’s contains even starker facts than usual about species loss and decline in recent decades as a result of human activity. The Tanzania office held a press event to broadcast the key findings to assembled journalists and bigwigs, and the messages were conveyed quite successfully. At the end of the day I clocked the big poster resting against one of the compound walls.

In the evening I made a rare foray into the city centre to meet a friend from the UK who was passing through Dar es Salaam. We agreed to meet at the strange setup of a restaurant attached to a 24-hour casino. Now I know it exists it could be a good solution for any nighttime cravings for American diner food. One to note.
