Yes it was

I did wonder whether it was worth returning to the Acropolis after 60 years, but I can now say - yes indeed it was worth it. A totally different experience, as it was bound to be, but, as soon as I saw the Parthenon close up, I was just as awe struck as I was at 16. One can no longer wander amongst the ruins as we did all those years ago, but it is still a sight to wonder at. (And I was grateful now for the paved paths that have been added!)

I wanted my blip to give some idea of the wonder of the place, but I have added a photo of the whole thing (covered in scaffolding during reconstruction work) and a photo of the Temple of Athena Nike, just one of the many other monuments on the Acropolis that you walk by or through to get to the top.

We managed to secure a timed admission ticket early enough to avoid the huge tour groups coming from the massive cruise ships currently docked in Piraeus, and were able to wander as we wanted with few people around. It was not the same when we left.

We then walked down to the Acropolis Museum, a new and very impressive place. Here are the original Caryatids from the Erechtheion - 5/6 as we have one in the British Museum thanks to Lord Elgin, a space is left there for its return!

We had a lovely salad lunch at the Museum, sitting outside with a view of the Acropolis. We have had the perfect day weather-wise - bright and sunny but not hot, just pleasantly warm.

An excellent day.
