Musical notes

This is something I see every day at the moment as I'm practising Thomas Attwood Walmisley's 'Magnificat' which our Turkdean choir will be singing at a special Evensong on Sunday 17th November to celebrate the installation of two new high-tech infra-red heating chandeliers. The fund raising campaign was very successful!

In this piece, the sopranos are split into first and second parts and this time I'm singing second soprano - or Soprano Can. as it's written here.  If you're interested, below is some info I've gleaned from Wikipedia describing the difference between Soprano Dec. and Soprano Can.

Many thanks to jensphotos for hosting the MM challenge.

The term "decani" comes from Latin and means "place of the dean" (the side where the Dean sits) and "cantori" refers to the side where the singer (or cantor) sits. In a church choir the abbreviations "Dec." and "Can." are used to refer to these sides and when a composer calls for divisi, the sopranos are separated into Soprano I and Soprano II.
