A Double-spotted Female Meadow Brown
I apologise once again for the sub-standard image posted yesterday. When I came back from the pub it already had comments so I just left it. Special thanks to whoever gave it stars.
Today I went back out on yet another butterfly quest and I therefore offer you a Female Meadow Brown (Maniola jurtina) but one with a difference. One with double spots.
I often tell people that a gatekeeper is easy to recognise because of its figure-of-eight spots - ie a g8-keeper.
Occasionally though you do get a meadow brown with double spots but still easy to ID because the gatekeeper has a moderate area of orange on its hindwing whereas the meadow brown doesn't. Actually today I saw two such beasts but the other only had double spots on the underside of its wings.
Actually even easier for me in Fife as I am highly unlikely to see a gatekeeper this far north.
