The Best

One thing I never expect to brag about is my card-playing ability,  however today I was the village Social Club Whist Champion and, just to prove it, I won a packet of biscuits saying "The Best".

Our speaker at the club today was unable to attend so we quickly organised games of whist. Well, I play a version of whist every time we visit #1 Daughter but I have never played it as we did today. Most of the people in the room had little or no idea how to play it and some didn't even know the names of the suits.

Now, I understand partner whist, watching how your partner plays and playing low if you think their card will win the trick. However, we swapped partners every round, each of us keeping the joint score from the round. Even I was confused but the village charity organiser kept me right about which seat I had to move to.

At the end this gentleman argued with me about my scoring. "This can't be right. Why have you written 12 and 11?" "Because my partner and I won 12 out of 13 and the other pair won 1. Then I was in a partnership where we won 11 out of 13!"

This blip isn't an exact copy of a hand but, in one round I did have all 4 Aces in my 13 cards!
