Cyanobacteria on Bassenthwaite lake
Better known as blue-green algae, it is unusual to have a bloom so thick this late in the year on Bassenthwaite. It is licking around all the margins at the North end of the lake and it is probably a combination of the still, relatively warm air temperatures and nutrient rich water that has encouraged it.
Needless to say we did not swim!
Cyanobacteria produce toxins that may cause skin rashes and more severe symptoms if swallowed. Dogs are at risk if they drink the water, or lick their coat after swimming, with severe symptoms requiring very rapid vet treatment.
