Pies
What better on a drab November afternoon than a fine array of pies. Courtesy of Bennetts of Dunblane. They don't half look tasty, mate.
The word "pie" comes from the Latin word pica, which means "magpie". The word changed to "pie" in Old French, and then became the English word for the bird after the French invaded England.
The word "pie" may also be connected to the magpie because medieval pies often contained a variety of animal meats, such as rabbits, pigeons, crows, and chickens. Magpies are known for collecting odds and ends in their nests.
The earliest known use of the word "pie" was in the Middle English period, around 1476, in the writings of William Caxton.
