Lynx cub

I was up at 6am to get showered and ready for our 6.50am entry into the hide. Unfortunately in our basic accommodation I have to share a bathroom and it was occupied until 6.40am, so I was hanging around waiting to wash and then in the end it was a mad rush to do so. There was no time to eat anything but I managed to gulp down a mug of tea.

When we got to the hide there was a lynx sitting quite far from the hide, and as the sun had not yet risen he was in darkness. We observed him for a while and as the sun rose and it got lighter I took some photos. It left but came back later so I got more photos, and then shortly before we were to exit the hide at 11am we had a female walking past, although she was more skittish and did not stay long.

We had a brunch back at the lodge, and then as we were not due back in the hide until 3.30pm again, our photo leader went through how he processes his images. It’s always interesting seeing which methods and techniques someone else uses, as with Adobe software there really are a hundred ways to skin a cat! (What an unfortunate choice of metaphor!)

I went for a short walk, I needed to stretch my legs after all that sitting in the hide. I also finally managed to speak to Gavin. The WiFi is very weak here, only available in the kitchen area, and there is hardly any phone reception except in certain spots. I managed by standing outside where I could get a connection.

At 3.30pm we went back into the hide and there was a lynx lying on the rocks waiting for us! He was so sleepy he just lay there for a long while, not doing much. There was not much activity until about 2 hours later when a female and her two cubs walked in front of the hides. The one cub was very skittish so ran off and we did not see it, but this little one as seen here was a bit curious but at the same time very nervous. I managed to get a shot of this cub before it ran off - and a shot of mama lynx in extras. You will note that the cub does not yet have that lovely white beard. Later the male lynx joined the group and was sitting calling for quite a while, maybe for the other cub? They make a peculiar sound that is surprisingly not very loud.

We stayed in the hide until 7.30pm, and then went back to the house for supper. The hides have been busy all weekend, there is one large hide that takes 8 people (although we were 9 in there) and then two smaller ones which can take two people each.

We will have another early morning hide session before we depart tomorrow, to fly back home to the UK. It has been a very busy time with no down time so apologies for not having time for journals. I am delighted with the photos I got, we have been very lucky with sightings. I am however more than ready to get home to my own bathroom and own bed!
