A view from Jeanneb

Camara do Lobos

Our penultimate day - already! - we just had to make a visit to the fishing village Camara do Lobos.

We arranged to meet Orchid99 at the bus stop outside the Savoy Palace Hotel. On previous visits we have walked but even though the tunnel is now open apparently the walkway at the end of Praia Formosa has been blocked by a rockfall.
The bus took us to the terminus by the cement works and we walked from there. A nice way to view the village.
There are still lots of colourful fishing boats there as you can see in the blip. What used to be fishermen’s work places along the wharfe is now the Pousada ‘Churchill Bay’.  Churchill famously stayed here in 1950 to paint. Extra
A good place for a drink and people watching. It is supposed to open at 11.00 but we waited a good 20 minutes and couldn’t even sit down as the seats were wired together. The only place to sit was next to Churchill!
Eventually we went around the corner where our view was of these lovely fishing boats and the hillside beyond instead of the harbour. It got very hot whilst we were sitting there and I kept having to move to get further into the shade.

We took a walk up to the church and then along to the bus stop for a return journey to Funchal. Orchid99 was staying for Sunday lunch at a restaurant above the bay, thank you so much for being a part of our holiday we are jealous of your second   week and will look forward to seeing the blips.

We got off the bus at the back of the Savoy Palace and decided to pay a call for a drink in the lovely gardens by the  pool as we often did when staying there two years ago. They were very welcoming.

From there we walked down to the Santa Caterina park and had another drink and some tuna tapas overlooking the two cruise ships in the harbour today. Definitely a favourite spot with us.

Before returning to our hotel we popped down to the marina area to see the memorial tribute for Remembrance, we saw them preparing for this on our last visit. A beautiful  tribute of flowers plus a traditional poppy wreath - extra 2. So good to see acts of remembrance around the world, back home son Alex was reading out the list of names from our village war memorial this morning.

Back to pack and head out for a meal shortly. We’ve had a great week just over too soon.
