The Hungry Caterpillar

This morning Gladders, the little fella and I went for a wander up Arnside Knot as Auntie Caroline (also known as "Wifie") and Gus stayed at home as he was feeling rather unwell. To our amazement we were greeted with the site of dozens of Scotch Arguses filling the area around us. If it weren't for the ticks it would have been paradise.

I thought that this photo of a Cinnabar moth caterpillar summed up our morning well as in all we saw 10 species of butterflies and countless varieties of moths.
we saw...
- Plenty of Scotch Arguses
- A good number of Meadow Browns
- A couple of Small Tortoiseshells
- An odd Cabbage White
- A few Gatekeepers
- A handful of Graylings
- Some beautiful Small Skippers
- A sprinkling of Speckled Woods
- The crown of them all was a Northern Brown Argus
- And to cap it off there were a gathering of Fritillaries which we never managed to identify as they were whizzing by so quickly.
