FX Velarde’s Modernist Masterpiece
I travelled to Wallasey this morning to see my sisters. We went for a walk and stopped off in the library coffee shop - swan forks for 3 swans in extras! But I had to blip this church as it’s so unusual.
The distinctive bell tower is a long familiar landmark but I’d never been inside this ‘English Martyr’s Church’, designed by Liverpool architect Francis Xavier Velarde (built 1953 and since restored) in Romanesque Modern style. Its distinctive features are too many to write about but hopefully you get some sense of it. He designed 18 churches in all.
After all this historical fascination we went home and had a huge catch up over a bowl of scouse and a glass of wine!
