St. Michael’s Hospital
in the borough of Dun Laoghaire.
My daughter had a procedure here today and I met her there to give her some support - as you do when you are a Mammy.
I waited in the x-Ray waiting area for her when she had an ultrasound exam. It was delayed somewhat so I waited for an hour for her when she was in a separate waiting area.
I watched as the lady in reception dealt with various people scheduled to have x-rays. She was patient, kind, professional and charming. It was very nice to witness.
Here’s an example:
Receptionist: Good morning (to an elderly lady who walked in)
Elderly Lady: Good morning. I’m afraid I mislaid my appointment letter and don’t remember if it’s for today or next Thursday.
R: That’s no problem. What is your name ? (As she searches on her computer). Sure look it’s for next Thursday but take a seat there and we’ll see what we can do.
EL: Oh dear I’m so sorry amnt I an awful noodle! I’m scheduled for cataract surgery so the eyesight is not great.
R: Oh where are you having the cataract surgery done?
EL: (Mentions hospital and consultant)
R: Oh sure my sister in law had hers done there and your man is terrific. You know he’s from Kerry and has a holiday home near my neighbour’s in laws
EL: Yes I’ve heard he is very good.
R: (To Radiologist who just walked in)…. Can you fit this lady in, she mixed up her appointment dates.
Rad: If you can wait for a while, we’ll see what we can do.
And I’m sitting there taking this all in. I feel this is taking good care of people.
The hospital building is old fashioned in a good way and right in the centre of the town. And to pay homage to it, my blip is one of those old fashioned chunky radiators. I think you get my drift there.
Hannah and I had slap up grub in The Gourmet Cafe; I bought a big fat tartan throw in Penneys and home now watching The Last Hurrah on Film4. Political Satire (is there any other kind of politics) directed by John Ford.
The outcome of Hannah’s scan was positive so maybe I will actually sleep well tonight.
