Climbing Ben Nevis
I have climbed Ben Nevis and I have the certificate to prove it. I have been one of the highest people in the United Kingdom. It's such a bizarre thought and I must admit, I loved the climb!
Although it was probably a little too hot to be walking it, we were prepared with food and water so it wasn't too much of a challenge. Rory climbed it in blistering heat with severe sunburn on his back and blisters on both of his feet, so anyone can do it!
We passed people who were giving up about the half way point due to the heat, but we kept plodding on! We made ourselves a friendly (and private) competition to beat a group of walkers that we kept passing and then being over taken by, and in the end, we beat them to the summit but not by a huge amount!
The views from the top are indescribable! You get such a rush of excitement from reaching the summit that the scenery almost doesn't feel real! There were men in kilts, there were people playing guitars and singing, we were surrounded by people in great spirits. It almost feels like there is a sense of community between all those at the top!
The downside to reaching the top is the descent. It doesn't take as long as the climb but it's long and both Rory and I were knackered and sunburnt and just wanted to be at the bottom as quickly as possible. I am almost 100% sure Rory was suffering from sun stroke by the time we reached the bottom!
Bloody, bruised, blistered and burnt we made it to the summit and all the way back down! It's safe to say that we will be having a quiet day tomorrow!
