Galahs
Their name comes from the Yuwaalaraay language of North Western NSW. We associate them particularly with the mid west and the wheat belt but they are found almost everywhere in Australia. They have adapted readily to town and city life and around here they seem to like water.
In Australian slang a ‘galah’ is a stupid person, a fool. Perhaps that has something to do with their bright pink plumage, or their habit of congregating in noisy, chattering flocks of as many as 1000. In the outback a ‘galah session’ refers to a group of people – generally women – who get together for a chat and a gossip. Such slanders aside, galahs are in fact quite intelligent and playful.
