Carpets of Sparkle
It’s another murky day, though there’s a brief period of sunshine where the sun just manages to peak over the hill into the garden. I dash outside, focusing on the damp webs and silk threads forming carpets of sparkle on top of the heather and dwarf conifers - my blip today.
The rest of the day is taken up with sewing. I used to make most of my clothes; I loved the whole process even making several wedding dresses including my own - a copy of a designer dress which I’d tried on and loved. Over the years, sewing became consigned to home furnishings rather than fashion, and increasingly my old machine was more trouble than it was worth.
During the pandemic, I decided I’d buy a new machine, keen to do creative things like free embroidery. In the end, all I made were fabric masks - useful, but hardly the artistic work I’d planned. Since then, it’s sat unused - together with all my art and craft supplies - waiting for me to feel inspired.
I’d like to tell you that today’s endeavours fell into the ‘creative’ category, but I’m simply working on necessary alterations that have been gathering dust for months - if not years. There’s a long tunic where I want to change the ‘inside out’ seams, and palazzo trousers that are just too long.
It takes me ages to just thread the machine correctly, and while the ‘automatic’ needle threader sounds a fantastic invention, it takes me ages to actually get it working, even after resorting to YouTube videos. Still, I get there in the end - and successful complete the alterations of three garments.
By the evening, I’ve definitely had enough, and settling down to watch Strictly is more than welcome!
