Auntie Rioters

My Dear Princess and Dear Fellow,

Today the hīkoi took place in Wellington, it was a peaceful protest against attempts by Aotearoa's version of the Reform Party* to undermine the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi. 

Te Tiriti is a foundational document which recognises and safeguards Māori rights to custodianship over the land. 

It's something which has worked reasonably well, unless you happen to be a self-serving populist right-wing politician who sees the worth in dividing people up to score some cheap votes. 

So here we are now. 

I avoided going into town because of the hīkoi, but Tiger rode in on the early train, surrounded by protesters. He came over for dinner tonight and told us that he overheard a couple of young fellows talking about killing all politicians. 

At which point an elderly Māori lady came over and told the young men off. "Don't be d*cks!" she told them, with a wagging finger.

It's good advice. The right-wing is - as always - eager to present themselves as victims. They'll use any excuse.

But as it turns out, the protest went off peacefully, even good-naturedly. 

Everyone should listen to their aunties.
