Grand Day Out
V and I decided to go to London for a big day out for my birthday.
I was sent a lot of messages from London friends and family wishing me happy birthday with pictures of snow falling in the city. We only had wind in Little Slade but feared for the trains but all ran smoothly. I also had enchanting videos from Ivy and Leo.
We first went to W&T to pick up something nice and then had a delicious pasta lunch in Padella. I had a memorable chocolate sorbet which they stuck a candle in - so delicious I put it on instagram as my birthday pic but sadly after I’d blown the candle out.
We then went to the British Museum for the Silk Road exhibition which was a bit too detailed for the large crowd, a lot of shuffling along to read a caption and look at a pot but we got the bigger picture, and enjoyed the bigger pieces like these superb cranes.
We then went down to Battersea power station to see a Bafta screening of Blitz. I hadn’t been since it had all been restored and was surprised how much of it was given over to offices and flats. And a mediocre shopping centre. We found a bar and had some soup and cocktails before going to see the film.
It’s an impressive piece of filmmaking, visceral and powerful and very entertaining but it’s not a great film. I wish he’d work with a writer capable of delivering more complexity at script level.
Home on a well behaved train by 11pm. The frost had really set in when we got there and I needed to move the car but had to defrost the door open.
