Handsome Boy and a Sad Situation
Red-bellied woodpecker on the BarkButter feeder.
This morning I was trying to get 'close' shots of some yellowjackets as they flew into and out of their underground nest. I got a little too close for their comfort and, as I should have expected, they flew like bullets straight for me. I turned and hauled a--... Fast but not fast enough! I got stung on my left shoulder and just under my right eye. The eye is the really painful one. An ice compress, some Benadryl and I'm feeling somewhat better. By the time I went back to look, there were probably hundreds of pissed off yellowjackets buzzing around the area. Since we have dogs and the nest is just off a path in our backyard, I called a local pest control company to deal with the situation. C and I don't use poisons on our property so the decision to spray the nest was a difficult one. I was told that the insecticide used is a contact poison. It breaks down and dissipates in a 'few' hours. I'm not sure that helps me feel any better about this, but I would feel terrible if Fletcher or Maica were attacked. Dogs can easily die from numerous Yellowjacket stings. As can humans as well.
