Kammiserations
I was glued to the US election news within seconds of opening my eyes. Kamala has lost more roundly than many expected. It’s staggering until you realise that most people don’t follow political news and therefore aren’t affected by Trump’s racism towards Latinos or the Left’s outrage about his lack of integrity. I believe politically apathetic people think that Trump can magically reinvigorate the coal industry and lower the price of gas, whilst the Left pushes its main agenda item of converting all bathrooms unisex.
The only way to process the fact we have four more years of Trump staring us in the face is through sarcasm and distraction. I mostly spent the afternoon writing to friends accusing them of being out of touch liberal metropolitan elite and being responsible for the loss of the election. Present company included.
I lurched from tackling the news with sarcasm to feeling full of fear as to what restrictions and barriers will be put in front of Americans. The US is such a powerful presence in the world, both through its sheer might and the sense of its own exceptionalism, that this really does have ramifications for all.
