Grumpy Old Man

A better day

A better day today - quite bright this morning, no rain, very little wind. I took MrsM along to Dunollie where she was taking part in an event, and noticed that the sun was shining on the ferry Loch Striven as she came into the bay. The backdrop was a deep, dark sky. I decided to take a picture on the way back.

A few minutes later I returned along the seafront, but in that short time the sun had gone in and the picture had gone! So it's an EB of a tree fern that I was given last year. It's Dicksonia squarrosa, native to New Zealand. A friend gave me a couple of them as he was moving to a colder location, so I kept one and gave the other to Achamore Garden, on the Isle of Gigha, which has a milder climate. I'll pop it into the cold glasshouse over winter and grow it on a bit before I risk it outside.

Did some leaf raking today - and barrowed a lot of them to the Year 1 leaf mould bin at the back of the garage. A few more barrow loads and I'll be done.

Quote of the Day: 'Only spread a fern-frond over a man's head and worldly cares are cast out, and freedom and beauty and peace come in.' - John Muir.
