Lucky really

Considering the strength of the winds, from Storm Bert, we are quite lucky that all we experienced, in damage, is a lost ridge tile from the roof.
I hadn't realised it had gone until a roofer chap knocked on our door and said he'd noticed it.
He's going to ring during the week to arrange a time to come and replace it.
Some people, mainly further North, are flooded out, lost power and sustained more damage although in the surrounding areas, in Gloucestershire, there are areas of flooding.
When  they announced the name of Storm Bert I did wonder if it is after Bert Ford, who was a BBC weatherman for a few years from 1963.
When I served at RAF Gan, Maldive Islands, he was the meteorological officer. I went down to the sailing club, after coming off a night shift, and rang him saying that I was planning on going out sailing in the lagoon and what weather could I expect. "10kt wind, calm seas according to my weather radar" he told me. I went outside, looked across at the horizon and called him back.
"Never mind your radar Bert, look out of the window" The sky that was approaching was black from east to west and very soon the biggest storm, while I was there, hit the islands. Glad I didn't go out in the sailing dinghy. I went back to my billet and had a good sleep off night shift.
